PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

Dr Chew Han Shi Jocelyn

Assistant Professor and Clinician Scientist at the National University of Singapore. Studies digital phenotyping, behavioral science, and preventive cardiology to identify early cardiometabolic risk signals and support sustainable behavior change.

Dr. Chew completed her PhD at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, becoming the youngest nurse in Singapore to obtain a PhD. Dr. Chew is also the first nurse to have received training in the Stanford Biodesign methodology as a Singapore Biodesign Innovation Fellow (FY23/24), which included immersion at regional and global centres such as Beijing and the United States

Our projects range from observational trials, randomized controlled trials, implementation studies to the co-design and evaluation of digital health tools deployed in healthcare systems and communities.

"We Hope to Create an Ecosystem for Innovation": Assistant Professor Jocelyn Chew's Vision for Nursing Excellence

Assistant Professor Jocelyn Chew stands out as a pioneer who’s transforming healthcare through technology and behavioural science. The youngest nurse in Singapore to obtain a PhD, A/Prof Chew’s innovative approach to obesity management is redefining how we address one of Singapore’s most pressing health challenges. Her revolutionary app called eTRIP (Eating Trigger-Response Inhibition Program), which is currently being rebranded and renamed to ME (Mindful Eating), uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict and prevent dietary triggers, potentially impacting thousands of patients struggling with excess adiposity and cardiometabolic diseases.

The LDL-C sub-study investigates the efficacy of personalized health messaging in improving cholesterol management. By utilizing personality-tailored information grounded in behavioral science, this research explores how individualized communication can enhance the self-regulation of heart health. We invite current participants to join this optional investigation into the intersection of personality and cardiometabolic wellness.

Lighter-Mets
Lighter-Mets is a longitudinal research study designed to evaluate a structured lifestyle intervention for individuals with metabolic syndrome. Cardiovascular and metabolic health are often influenced by interconnected lifestyle habits; this programme aims to address these factors through evidence-based dietary and behavioural support. Over the course of one year, we aim to investigate how a combination of professional health coaching and digital health tools can support sustainable improvements in metabolic markers. Participants provide vital data through clinical assessments and, depending on their randomized study group, may gain access to personalized coaching and our dedicated research platform.

The preMELOW study explores the multifaceted experiences of perimenopause and post-menopause among women in Singapore. The transition into menopause is a significant biological and psychological phase, yet the factors that influence the severity and duration of symptoms remain insufficiently understood in the local context. Through this research, we seek to identify specific environmental, biological, and lifestyle factors that may trigger or alleviate menopausal symptoms. By documenting these lived experiences, our goal is to develop better clinical and community-based support systems for women navigating this life transition.

By documenting these perspectives, the study aims to inform the design of targeted interventions to mitigate weight stigma within clinical environments and enhance the long-term well-being of the healthcare workforce.
